| A Kanienkeha Story: |
Below you will find a true story that was written by Tekahiónhake (Ted) Peters. The story is written in the Kanien'kéha language.
At the time, Tekahiónhake was one of the students in an adult reading & writing class held at the local Adult Education Center IOHAHI:IO located in Ahkwesáhsne. The class was part of the language restoration program the Ahkwesasne Mohawk community created to continuously work on strengthening and restoring the language for the Seventh Generation yet born. .
This is a true story told to him by one of his relatives and he wrote it as part of a class taught by Kaweienón:ni. In her teaching she had students write stories they remembered from a long time ago. She used the students own stories to teach them reading and writing. The class was very successful. The students found the project to be more relevant and enjoyable.
Today Tekahiónhake is currently a Kanien'kéha Educator (Mohawk Immersion teacher) at the Tsi Snaihne School.

A general
translation of the story...
My Uncle Dave and a little boy just returned from fishing when it began very hard. My uncle Dave said to the little boy, "Hurry up and find something to cover the pail before the fish get wet !"
The boy began running around looking for something to cover the pail with. He found a piece of lumber and ran to cover the pail when he suddenly realized what uncle Dave had done.
The boy said to uncle Dave, "The fish are already floating around in a pail of water and you want me to cover it ?" " Are you trying to drive me crazy?"
