Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message
by Chief Jake Swamp
Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message is a wonderfully written and illustrated book for children of all ages. The author of this book is Chief Jake Swamp. Chief Swamp is from the Mohawk Nation and resides at Akwesasne (Land Where the Partridge Drums), which is also referred to as the Saint Regis Indian Reservation located in what is today northern New York State and extends into portions of Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
Chief Swamp is well known for the Tree of Peace Society that he founded to spread the message of Peace. He travels around the world planting white pine trees, for the white pine tree is a symbol of peace to the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse), which is composed of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and the Tuscarora who joined the Confederacy in approximately 1714. Chief Swamp also gives lectures and is in the process of developing a cultural center.
This is a wonderful book that will indirectly teach children that we are all connected and that peace and harmony with all that surrounds us is based on mutual respect. The wonderful illustrations by Irwin Printup, a Cayuga, coupled with the words of the Thanks Giving Address will take you and your child into the breathtaking beauty of nature and the Haudenosaunee worldview.
I highly recommend this book, for it, in beauty, shows respect for the Natural World and will begin your child on a lifelong journey of peace, love, and respect based on the Haudenosaunee way of viewing the world.
