Book Review of:

"Akwesasne Environmental Programs; Protecting Our Natural World"

Review provided by Kallen M. Martin

The colorfully designed 24 page booklet, "Akwesasne Environmental Programs; Protecting Our Natural World," uniquely describes the remarkable efforts of the Mohawk people to restore and protect their environment, and renew cultural practices.

After years of pollution from nearby corporate neighbors, the people of Akwesasne realized more than just their environment was being damaged. The response is seen in the work of seven community-based programs.

In addition to details of the services each program provides, the booklet also highlights the history of Akwesasne, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the extent of contamination of the St. Lawrence River and its ecosystem so important to the Mohawks.

"Akwesasne Environmental Programs; Protecting Our Natural World" was written and edited by Kallen M. Martin, an Akwesasne Mohawk and award winning freelance writer.

A Note From Kanatiiosh:

I highly recommend this booklet because it illustrates the positive steps that the community of Akwesasne is taking towards restoring the Natural World and the culture that has been impacted by continued assaults from outside corporations. Corporations that often place profit before the well being of First Nation people and the environment.

This full color booklet is well researched, well written, and beautifully illustrated with graphics and photographs. This is a must have booklet for those interested in the Haudenosaunee, the environment, the St. Lawrence River, and hazardous contamination.
