She:kon (greetings),
My name is Kanatiiosh. I am an Akwesasne Mohawk of the Wolf Clan. I reside at Akwesasne (which is also known, in part, as the St. Regis Indian Reservation).
I enjoy working with traditional mediums and art forms. I also work with contemporary mediums using Haudenosaunee symbols such as the Celestial Sky, clan animals, etc. Much of my artwork reflects my traditional teachings and love and respect for Haudenosaunee culture and the Natural World. My favorite subject matter to paint, quill, and bead are plants and animals. Some of my artwork on birch bark depicting Sky Woman and another piece on the game of javelins appears the children's book, "The Iroquois" by Richard Gaines.
Since the original creation of my art gallery, I have developed new art skills and am now doing raised beading and making black ash fancy and utility baskets, which will be added to this Website soon.
Assimilation and environmental injustice has taken a toll within our communities and Nations. As a result, many traditional art forms and the cultural and social aspects interconnected with them are at risk of becoming lost. Preservation is needed. The future generations need to understand the language, stories, history, and symbolism embedded within Haudenosaunee art. They need to know the cultural teachings and uses and the ecological aspects of what its and means to "do" art. These are the things that I hope to keep alive in my "doing" art.
I hope my Online Art gallery provides a window in which you can view Haudenosaunee traditional and contemporary arts. It is all of our responsibility to bring the arts forward to the next generations.
Many of the items are for sale. If you are interested in purchasing an item, or having me create something for you, please write to me at: Kanatiiosh@aol.com See also my autobiography for more information about me.
